Why did you choose VCU?
I chose VCU because this program has an endless number of possibilities offered for students. The amount of opportunities for research, volunteering, community outreach, and experiential learning is what makes VCU stand out to me, and it is the reason why we’ve earned such a great reputation. The VCU School of Pharmacy’s offerings are wide-ranging, all encompassing, welcoming and professional.
What has been your favorite learning experience at VCU, and why?
My favorite learning experience so far has to be my IPPE. I was placed in an independent pharmacy where I got to experience a unique side to a family-run community and work as part of the cohesive team. My IPPE showed me the importance of community and loyalty, as well as the pharmacist’s expertise in counseling, MTM and advocating for their patients. With each opportunity, I’ve been able to best improve my own abilities and receive guidance toward my future as a pharmacist.
In your words, describe the unique learning opportunities available at VCU.
The School of Pharmacy has a number of great learning opportunities available to its students. First and foremost, the faculty and staff are valuable resources in and out of the classroom. Also, there are many research opportunities across various fields that allow students to experience a wide range of topics in pharmacy and healthcare. VCU also has incredible reach in terms of IPPE and APPE opportunities due to the expansive base of preceptors willing to take on students for rotations. Lastly, VCU offers students the opportunity to practice in underserved areas throughout not just the state of Virginia but also the world through programs such as RAM, HOMBRE, and much more.
What are your future professional plans?
Upon graduation, I plan to begin residency training where I will ultimately specialize in hematology/oncology pharmacy. I am about to begin working in a hospital this fall, which I believe will help familiarize myself with hospital-based pharmacy and the various positions and responsibilities the role entails. The profession itself allows for such a variety of possibilities that I am still open to tailoring my own passion and developing my professional sensibilities with each opportunity.
