School of Pharmacy

The Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is a twelve-month program designed and structured to provide the organized health care community and the pharmacy profession with knowledgeable, creative, and resourceful practitioners who can provide direct patient care services in a community pharmacy practice environment. 

The VCU School of Pharmacy Ambulatory Care Residency Program consists of two twelve-month positions designed and structured to provide broad experiences in clinical care, teaching, scholarship, and professional service.

 The pharmacy residency programs at the VCU Health System began in 1970 as a two-year program associated with the Master of Science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1972 the hospital pharmacy program was accredited by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists and graduated its first resident. The residency became a one-year general program in 1977. In 1983 the clinical pharmacy residency was introduced and in 1992 these programs were merged into the pharmacy practice program following the evolution of PGY1 residencies. VCU Health System now offers a PGY1 Pharmacy residency and several PGY2 residencies. Since 1972, the VCU Health System programs have graduated over 300 residents.

The Congressional Healthcare Policy Fellow Program, a collaborative effort of the School of Pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has been preparing pharmacists for public service for a decade.
