Rachel W. Khan, Pharm.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy (SOP). Khan received her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 2012. She completed a 24-month ASHP-accredited PGY1&2 Pharmacotherapy Residency with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 2014.
Khan joined VCU SOP as a full-time, non-tenured faculty member in September of 2014. During her time at VCU, she has mentored and taught students in all 4 years of the SOP curriculum. Khan serves as a course coordinator for PHAR606: Nephrology/Urology Clinical Therapeutics Module, PHAR541: Patient Assessment in Pharmacy, and PHAR505: Pathophysiology and Patient Assessment. She has lectured in 13 courses within the University spanning over 10 different topics pertaining to her areas of expertise. Dr. Khan has been nominated for several teaching awards. In 2019, she was awarded with the Excellence in Interprofessionalism Award by the VCU Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Care.
Khan has been practicing as an Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacist at VCU Health since 2014. In 2018, she developed a new practice site as an Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacist in Nephrology at VCU Health. Khan precepts fourth-year pharmacy students on their Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) in Acute Care as part of her role as an Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacist. She also precepts pharmacy residents in her Internal Medicine and Outpatient Nephrology clinical practices. In 2017, she was awarded with the Outstanding Preceptor Award from the VCU SOP.
Professionally, Khan is involved in several local and national pharmacy organizations. She has been an active member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) in the Adult Medicine and Nephrology Practice and Research Networks (PRN). Within the Adult Medicine PRN, she has served as Chair various committees and served as an officer for several years (Secretary/Treasurer, Chair-elect, Chair). She is also active with the Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists (VSHP) where she serves on the Education Committee and was the creator and supervisor for clinical articles published in the organization’s monthly newsletter from 2014 to 2019. She is also a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). Within VCU, Khan serves as the advisor for the student chapter of ACCP, served as the advisor for the student chapter of the Phi Delta Chi Professional Pharmacy Fraternity, and has been the Vice-Chair and Chair of the Admissions Committee.
Khan has research interests in kidney disease, electrolyte disorders, hypertension, and the scholarship of teaching, learning, and assessment (SoTLA). She has published several book chapters and continuing education articles on the subjects of potassium and magnesium disorders, food-drug interactions in chronic kidney disease, sepsis, hypertension, and active learning strategies. She has been published in Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Current Atherosclerosis Report, the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine, and the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.
