Ron (Rollin) Ballentine, Pharm.D., CSCS
Dr. Ron Ballentine joined the faculty of the VCU School of Pharmacy in 1987 as an Associate Professor and was assigned to MCV Hospitals (now VCU Health) as Associate Director for Ambulatory Care Pharmacy. He was named Senior Associate Director of Pharmacy Operations for the hospital in 1992. In addition, he served concurrently in a number of other roles in the hospital: Clinical Specialist in Ambulatory/Primary Care (10 years), Coordinator of Pharmacy Residency Programs (10 years), Coordinator of the Pharmacy Infectious Disease Clinic (6 years) and Coordinator of the Pharmacy Smoking Cessation Clinic (10 years). He also served as Interim Director of Pharmacy on two separate occasions (1995-96 and 1998).
In 2001, he moved into the Dean's Office to serve as Coordinator of Experiential Education until 2007 when he moved into the position of Assistant Director of Admissions and Student Services where he remained until his retirement in 2017. During this time, he was also the Course Coordinator of the Oncology Module of the Clinical Pharmacotherapy Course for five years. He also served as Interim Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Services in 2016.
Dr. Ballentine completed his B.S. in Pharmacy degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy, and after working as a Staff Pharmacist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital for a year, completed his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. While in Ann Arbor, he also completed a Residency in Hospital Pharmacy at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
Before joining the faculty at VCU, he was on the faculty at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy for 12 years as an Assistant Professor and then tenured Associate Professor. For four of those years, he served as Chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Administration. During his time at Houston, he also held a joint appointment as an Oncology Clinical Pharmacist with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he provided clinical services and served as a preceptor for pharmacy students.
He is the author of over 30 publications in pharmacy and medical journals and has provided scientific/professional presentations in 31 states and the District of Columbia. He has served on numerous SOP, University and Hospital committees as well as the boards of professional and community organizations. He was a member of the Southeastern (Athens, GA) Pharmacy Residency Conference Steering Committee for five years and served as Chair of the Conference for one year. He was on the American Cancer Society Richmond Metro Area Board of Directors/Leadership Council for over 20 years and served as President for four years. He was on the Board of Directors of the Richmond Instructional Visiting Nurses Association for eight years and served terms as both President and Vice-President. He represented the Virginia Society of Hospital Pharmacists on the Virginia Coalition for a Smoke-Free Virginia for 10 years and served as Chair of the Coalition for five years. He was also included among the Top Pharmacists by "Guide to America" in 2006.
