2017-18 Preceptor of the Year Award

Patty Slattum, PharmD, PhD
VCU School of Pharmacy/Richmond Health and Wellness
Geriatrics APPE

2018 Preceptor of the Year Patty Slattum with J DiPiro

Some nominators stated:

“I believe Dr. Slattum should be rewarded for her passion for pharmacy and for her patients.  [She] continuously talked about her patients with such compassion that I felt an obligation to carry this out in my own work… [She] also is a wealth of knowledge. She encourages students to learn but does so in a way that is not intimidating… Dr. Slattum is an exceptional teacher, pharmacist, researcher, and person… Dr. Slattum was very inspiring to work with... She is extremely knowledgeable and engaged in the program, but what sets her apart is her concern for the residents who live at all of the different clinic sites.  She knows many of the residents by name and they feel comfortable telling her things that they keep secret from other health professionals because she has worked hard to develop a trusting relationship with each of them. She taught the other students and me a lot about how to develop relationships with patients who have a checkered past with healthcare professionals. I learned special skills that helped me discover root problems and I had the opportunity to practice motivational interviewing… She helps students to become independent learners by giving them the freedom and flexibility to solve problems [and then] steps in to provide guidance in a timely manner.  She works with students to develop soft skills and finds opportunity to help them grow professionally... Dr. Slattum is an inspiring and passionate professor whose energy always radiates to students and others around her.  She was one of the main reasons I am inspired to become a geriatric advocate...”

2017-2018 Outstanding Preceptor Awards

The Outstanding Preceptor Award recognizes a preceptor of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotations who has demonstrated excellent precepting of at least two student pharmacists each year for at least two consecutive years and is nominated by students based on outstanding preceptor criteria. Selection of multiple recipients each year ensures a broad recognition of the valuable contributions of many excellent preceptors who enable approximately 1,100 APPE rotations across nine APPE rotation blocks in six regions of the Commonwealth and out-of-state, too. Comments shared here were submitted by the Class of 2017.

2018 Outstanding Preceptor Eric Colpo

Eric Colpo, PharmD Walgreens Pharmacy Advanced Community

“From the get-go, Eric treated me with nothing but respect.   He asked me a lot of clinical questions and assigned weekly projects that he thought were most prevalent in community pharmacy.  He used many real-life examples to give me a better understanding of things. One thing that really stood out to me was how Eric went out of his way to help his patients.  You can see the impact that he has in the community because of the questions patients asked him.    Eric is an inspiration and I hope that one day I can be as great of a pharmacist as he is”.

2018 Outstanding Preceptor Cat Floroff

Catherine Floroff, PharmD, BCCCP, BCPS Sentara Leigh Hospital Acute Care I - General Medicine

“I learned the most during small group discussions that engaged the students to answer and ask questions as opposed to sitting through presentations. During my rotation my preceptor had mini impromptu topic discussions that would come up throughout the day and I felt like that really catered to my learning style…. Dr. Floroff has been very cognizant about putting educational and meaningful activities on my schedule and I truly appreciate her efforts in making my time at SNGH worthwhile.”

2018 Outstanding Preceptor Brad Heidenthal

Brad Heidenthal, PharmD, BCPS Riverside Regional Medical Center Acute Care 1 – General Medicine

“Dr. Heidenthal expects a lot of students which made the rotation challenging but also forced me to learn.  This rotation persuaded me to apply for a residency.    He really gives back to the profession by teaching residents and students even under a heavy workload.  He treated me like an actual pharmacist and provided useful feedback throughout the rotation.”

2018 Outstanding Preceptor Holly Lake

Holly Lake, PharmD Rx3 Pharmacy Compounding Elective

Dr. Holly Lake “truly is what a preceptor should be... … Her dedication to the profession inspired me... Her compassion for others was evident… She is very respectful, understanding, helpful and works well with students… Her feedback was always communicated in a manner that made me realize things I'd missed, but that inspired me to look further… She provided me with resources for which to brush up on pharmacy law and look at NAPLEX review questions, recognizing that both of these are important to work on ASAP.”

2018 Outstanding Preceptor Abby Matulewicz

Abigale (Abby) Matulewicz, PharmD VCU School of Pharmacy Academic Teaching Elective

“Dr. Matulewicz is by far one of the best preceptors I have had on my rotations… [She] stimulated active independent and guided learning with constructive feedback all throughout the rotation. She provided me with a list of tasks that needed to be completed, allowed me to work on them independently, but was also available to provide guidance and feedback as needed. It is clear that Dr. Matulewicz has a passion for teaching and the pharmacy profession, she is very enthusiastic and is a wonderful role model of a practitioner as well as an instructor.”

2018 Outstanding Preceptor Eric McLain

Eric McLain, PharmD, BCPS Inova Alexandria Hospital Advanced Hospital; Acute Care 1-General Medicine & Acute Care II-Transitional Care

“This rotation far exceeded my expectations.  The entire pharmacy team teaching us has been beneficial.  Eric was encouraging and helped push me to make connections and come to the right conclusion on my own.   He was always available for questions or to explain something I didn’t understand.   He is a leader in the pharmacy team and he has made me enjoy something that I never thought I would.”

2018 Outstanding Preceptor Steve Swaringen

Steve Swaringen, RPh Anthem/CareMore Ambulatory Care; Managed Care Elective

“Steve is an amazing preceptor who really tries to show students a unique field of pharmacy... He does a fantastic job at facilitating students to take on individual projects that are both educational and functional... He was a true professional who was so well respected by his interdisciplinary peers and was a great leader and role model... He is a phenomenal pharmacist and teacher and has motivated me to continue following my goals of going into managed care and has offered to continue to mentor me throughout the process...”
