Graduate Application Process Overview

Upon completion of the Graduate School application, submission of GRE and TOEFL (foreign students only) scores, transcripts and recommendation letters, application packages are sent to the School of Pharmacy for admission decisions. Many criteria are evaluated when determining admissions to the School’s Graduate Program.

  • Applicants are reviewed and ranked on academic performance (VCU has a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0)
  • Class rank during undergraduate education
  • Advanced degrees
  • Research experience (either work related or through formal education)
  • GRE scores (close attention is paid to percentile scores
  • Entering class generally has a minimum Q+V of 1000/1600 or 300/340), however there is no cutoff score
  • TOEFL scores (note that 250/300, 600/677 or 100/120 is the minimum VCU required score)
  • Candidate interviews

No single criteria is given priority, the application is based on overall strengths. Only official VCU application packages will be reviewed for admission.   Students are admitted with just undergraduate degrees, however, candidates with Masters may be considered more favorably due to their research experience.

We have a rolling admission and notification policy. We recommend that you submit your application by December 1st for consideration for funded positions (October 1 deadline for spring semester). Applications received by February 1 will receive priority consideration for funding. Applications received after February 1st will also be considered for funding and admission based on availability. The final deadline for Fall admission is May 1st for all tracks except Medicinal Chemistry. Applications for Medicinal Chemistry should be received on or before January 1st. You may submit your application anytime between these dates.

Please see for inquiries, admission, and additional information.  Please note that the departments of and have admissions targeted to specific advisors. Therefore, student preference for a specific advisor or research area should be mentioned specifically in the statement of purpose. Pharmaceutics may also directly contact a small number of applicants for a telephone interview.
